I stared at my husband in disbelief. He could not be doing this, he could not be coming in here and ruining everything. Just when I was being bolder in my life, and moving toward what I truly wanted, I could feel the cage that was my marriage closing around me.

“Why now, Earl?” I didn’t believe for one moment that my husband had had a sudden change of heart, that he’d realized for the first time in years that he had a wife at home. My husband never did anything unless it benefited him.

He walked toward me and gave me a pat on the cheek. “The last time I checked, I paid for this house. If I want to live here, I’m going to. So if you will excuse me darling, I’m going to take my things up to the bedroom.”

He picked up his suitcases and brushed past me. The woman I had been before Michael had come into my life would have meekly accepted my husband back home, would have bowed to his place as man of the house. But the truth was, Michael was in my life and I wasn’t ready to let him go. I could never be with him as long as Earl was in the same bed as me, so I turned to look at my husband’s retreating back.

“You can put your things in Beverly’s old room.” I stiffened my spine when he stopped and turned slowly to face me.

I swallowed hard, since this was the first time in my marriage that I had dared to contradict my husband and tell him what to do. He’d never raised a finger against me before but there was always a first time for everything. Fortunately I had an ace up my sleeve, there was another man in this house, one who was much bigger and stronger than my husband. Even if Earl did try to assert his authority forcefully, Michael would be on him faster than he could blink.

“And why would I put my things in there?” Earl put the suitcase on the floor, crossed his arms over his chest and gave me a smirk. He didn’t think I was serious about this, he thought I would back down. My husband had trained me to believe that I wasn’t worthy of attention, but I’d also trained him to believe that he could walk all over me and I wouldn’t say a peep.

“You are going to be sleeping in there, that’s why. Here is the way things are going to work, Earl. If you want don’t want certain people to know about your philandering ways you’ll sleep where I tell you to sleep.” I clasped my hands in front of me to keep them from trembling. I couldn’t believe the words coming out of my mouth but there was a certain satisfaction in finally putting my foot down.

Earl nervously licked his lips, and his eyes shifted to the side.
